- Gone but Not Forgotten
Don Black Memorialized last Saturday Don Black, Editor and Publisher of the Dayton Weekly News was memorialized on Saturday September 11th at Ethan Temple Seventh-Day Adventist Church. Don passed away in April of 2020 but because it was during the height of the COVID-19 Pandemic the decision was made to postpone his services until his church, where he has been a member for more than 50 years was able to reopen. A host of family, friends, and business colleagues from across the country gathered to pay respects to their beloved friend, mentor, colleague, and family member. A few of the speakers to attend the service included Judge Walter Rice, Regina Holman from Congressman Mike Turner’s office, Dr. Anthony Whitmore, former Director of Government and Community Relations for Greater Dayton RTA, childhood friends Vernon Holman and Clearance McGill, church friends Frank Watkins and William Ragin, Sr. We were also blessed with stories of his childhood from his sisters Carol Sullivan and Barbara Augistine. “I knew he would do great things because he was so creative as a child.” Said Sister Barbara in her tearful tribute to her oldest brother. Resolutions and proclamations were presented from Ethan Temple SDA Church, the Roosevelt High School class of 1963, and the Dayton African Elders Council. Beautiful musical selections were delivered by his brother, nieces, and the Ethan Temple Praise Team. Pastor Mackenzie Kambizi delivered a beautiful eulogy and was followed by a final tribute from his son, Donerik Black. Donerik is the current Editor and Publisher of the Dayton Weekly News. Said Donerik about his father, “He told me that as long as he was alive, he would continue to parent me. It wasn’t until recently that I realized that even at 51 years of age I still need my parent.” The Black family would like to extend a special thank-you to all the heartfelt thoughts and prayers from friends, family, and colleagues over the past year. Your words of encouragement and fond memories of Don Black were greatly appreciated.

- Hamilton, One of the Notable Shows Coming to Victoria Theater this Season
Dayton Live 2021-2022: A New Season of Theater and Music By Whitney Bell The Victoria Theatre Association changed their name to Dayton Live in March of 2020. Then the pandemic happened. During their “extended intermission,” and despite layoffs and uncertainty, Dayton Live continued to engage audiences with Virtual Field Trips, socially-distanced summer camps, and even a video series featuring what goes on backstage. “But Dayton Live is back,” according to Ty Sutton, President and CEO, “and we’re gearing up for an incredible season.” The most notable show for the 2021-22 season announced on Tuesday, might be HAMILTON, the story of founding father Alexander Hamilton, complete with hip-hop, jazz, and R&B. Sutton says the two weeks in January is “going to be huge.” The Broadway show will run from January 26 to February 6, 2022 and single tickets will go on sale late summer or early fall of this year. Sutton recommends getting season tickets through daytonlive.org, and only purchasing tickets through their website, to guarantee a valid seat at the best price. “Any other location is a secondary ticketing site, and we can’t guarantee you’ll purchase valid tickets if you buy them anywhere but daytonlive.org.” The Premier Health Broadway In Dayton series also includes DEAR EVEN HANSON, COME FROM AWAY, MEAN GIRLS, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, and JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR. “We have so many great shows,” says Sutton, “it’s hard to highlight only a few.” STOMP, CATS, and THE HIP-HOP NUTCRACKER are also scheduled, as well as performances to run on the Projects Unlimited Star Attractions and Universal 1 Credit Union Music Series. Dayton Live owns and operates the Benjamin & Marian Schuster Performing Arts Center, Victoria Theatre, Metropolitan Arts Center including The Loft Theatre, the PNC Arts Annex, and The Arts Garage. They also home the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance (Dayton Ballet, Dayton Opera, Dayton Philharmonic), Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, The Human Race Theater Company, Muse Machine, and other local performing arts organizations. Sutton says, “We can’t wait to have our venues brimming with people and shows and excitement.” For more information on upcoming shows and tickets visit daytonlive.org.
