- Dayton Black Restaurant Week
Your opportunity to support local businesses, try new food, and enjoy some great eats! Jamila Briscoe is the creator of the Dayton Food Diaries, a local food blog, with occasional out of town “field trips.” The blog focuses on varied cuisine from all over the the city. So it should come as no surprise that Briscoe is also the organizer for Dayton Black Restaurant Week. Dayton Black Restaurant Week stems from Jamila's passion for highlighting Black-owned food-based businesses, including brick and mortar restaurants, food trucks, caterers and chefs. She is serious about displaying the diversity of offerings available throughout the city. Not even a pandemic, could hold her back! Last year she organized the inaugural event, and it was a hit! Many participants noted they were able to reach new customers. As an added benefit, individuals throughout the Miami Valley were taking advantage of some great deals while being introduced to a variety of new businesses. Briscoe created a win-win for our community, and she's back at it again. The second year of Dayton Black Restaurant Week has already started, but it's no too late to take advantage of the deals! This year Dayton Black Restaurant Week is expanding and will be closing out the week by hosting an in-person Food Fest featuring mobile eateries on October 16th, at Genuine Work (15 McDonough St, Dayton, OH) from 2-6pm. - New Subscription Plans Announced
Introducing free digital and group pricing plans! Since 1993, the generous support of loyal subscribers, advertisers, and community stakeholders, has powered The Dayton Weekly News to provide positive news and valuable information to Dayton's African American community. We are not your typical newspaper. We strive to inspire others and change the narrative about “us”, while sharing information and insight about the black experience. We are excited to build on the legacy of Founder and Publisher Emeritus, Don G. Black, as we introduce content from local contributors and host events that uplift and build our community. We hope to be a platform for the creators, movers, and leaders amongst us to connect with the masses. We hope to facilitate meaningful dialogue, empower our readers, celebrate our successes and in the process, strengthen our community. These are tough times for all, and we acknowledge that the antiquated, subscription based model is an impediment to our ability to deliver the news to you. This summer, we are introducing simplified pricing plans, which better reflect our position as community newspaper with a mission to bring down barriers... like the cost of accessing your local news. Beginning August 10, 2021, your Dayton Weekly News will offer a free subscription to the digital copy. Recent digital subscribers may request prorated refunds from the date of the new offer to the end of their current paid subscription. Upon renewal, they will transition to the free digital subscription plan. Your Dayton Weekly News will continue to offer print copies by mail to those that prefer to receive the news by mail. Readers that choose this plan will receive the digital copy for free but will need to cover the cost of printing and deliver by US Mail. Current readers that are print only subscribers will need to update their records to include an email address to receive the free digital copy. Lastly, we are offering group/bulk pricing for delivery to a single location. Organizations, churches, and businesses that would like to have copies available for members and patrons may request a set number of print copies to be delivered each week to a single address for distribution. This option can be customized to meet your needs. If you would like to make copies available at your location, contact us for details. We want to hear your opinions too! Let us know what you want to see, how we're doing, or simply what is needed to make the Dayton Weekly News your "go to" for community news and information. We invite you to patiently grow with us, as we continue updates to our brand across social platforms, revise our website, and refresh the look and feel of the print edition. A new look, more relevant content, and more opportunities to engage with others... Let's build our community. Together, we change the narrative!
- Gone but Not Forgotten
Don Black Memorialized last Saturday Don Black, Editor and Publisher of the Dayton Weekly News was memorialized on Saturday September 11th at Ethan Temple Seventh-Day Adventist Church. Don passed away in April of 2020 but because it was during the height of the COVID-19 Pandemic the decision was made to postpone his services until his church, where he has been a member for more than 50 years was able to reopen. A host of family, friends, and business colleagues from across the country gathered to pay respects to their beloved friend, mentor, colleague, and family member. A few of the speakers to attend the service included Judge Walter Rice, Regina Holman from Congressman Mike Turner’s office, Dr. Anthony Whitmore, former Director of Government and Community Relations for Greater Dayton RTA, childhood friends Vernon Holman and Clearance McGill, church friends Frank Watkins and William Ragin, Sr. We were also blessed with stories of his childhood from his sisters Carol Sullivan and Barbara Augistine. “I knew he would do great things because he was so creative as a child.” Said Sister Barbara in her tearful tribute to her oldest brother. Resolutions and proclamations were presented from Ethan Temple SDA Church, the Roosevelt High School class of 1963, and the Dayton African Elders Council. Beautiful musical selections were delivered by his brother, nieces, and the Ethan Temple Praise Team. Pastor Mackenzie Kambizi delivered a beautiful eulogy and was followed by a final tribute from his son, Donerik Black. Donerik is the current Editor and Publisher of the Dayton Weekly News. Said Donerik about his father, “He told me that as long as he was alive, he would continue to parent me. It wasn’t until recently that I realized that even at 51 years of age I still need my parent.” The Black family would like to extend a special thank-you to all the heartfelt thoughts and prayers from friends, family, and colleagues over the past year. Your words of encouragement and fond memories of Don Black were greatly appreciated.

- Hamilton, One of the Notable Shows Coming to Victoria Theater this Season
Dayton Live 2021-2022: A New Season of Theater and Music By Whitney Bell The Victoria Theatre Association changed their name to Dayton Live in March of 2020. Then the pandemic happened. During their “extended intermission,” and despite layoffs and uncertainty, Dayton Live continued to engage audiences with Virtual Field Trips, socially-distanced summer camps, and even a video series featuring what goes on backstage. “But Dayton Live is back,” according to Ty Sutton, President and CEO, “and we’re gearing up for an incredible season.” The most notable show for the 2021-22 season announced on Tuesday, might be HAMILTON, the story of founding father Alexander Hamilton, complete with hip-hop, jazz, and R&B. Sutton says the two weeks in January is “going to be huge.” The Broadway show will run from January 26 to February 6, 2022 and single tickets will go on sale late summer or early fall of this year. Sutton recommends getting season tickets through daytonlive.org, and only purchasing tickets through their website, to guarantee a valid seat at the best price. “Any other location is a secondary ticketing site, and we can’t guarantee you’ll purchase valid tickets if you buy them anywhere but daytonlive.org.” The Premier Health Broadway In Dayton series also includes DEAR EVEN HANSON, COME FROM AWAY, MEAN GIRLS, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, and JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR. “We have so many great shows,” says Sutton, “it’s hard to highlight only a few.” STOMP, CATS, and THE HIP-HOP NUTCRACKER are also scheduled, as well as performances to run on the Projects Unlimited Star Attractions and Universal 1 Credit Union Music Series. Dayton Live owns and operates the Benjamin & Marian Schuster Performing Arts Center, Victoria Theatre, Metropolitan Arts Center including The Loft Theatre, the PNC Arts Annex, and The Arts Garage. They also home the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance (Dayton Ballet, Dayton Opera, Dayton Philharmonic), Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, The Human Race Theater Company, Muse Machine, and other local performing arts organizations. Sutton says, “We can’t wait to have our venues brimming with people and shows and excitement.” For more information on upcoming shows and tickets visit daytonlive.org.
